Sebright Loves Reading

Sebright Loves Reading is an adapted combination of the Destination Reader programme and Guided Reading.  It is a talk-based approach for teaching reading in KS2. Although it is aimed primarily at KS2, we promote these strategies across the school from Nursery all the way up to Year 6.

Sebright Loves Reading focuses on:

  • Oracy/discussion
  • Reading for pleasure to establish a love of reading
  • Reading to gain knowledge across the curriculum
  • Exposure to a wider variety of extended texts
  • Vocabulary

It aims to:

  • Foster a life-long love of reading
  • Develop a consistent approach to reading
  • Provide teachers with guidance in the teaching of reading
  • Provide a curriculum in line with the requirements of the New National Curriculum
  • Promote sustained reading and stamina in reading

Key features:

Independent learning based on three learning behaviours and seven reading strategies:

Learning Behaviours

  1. Support and actively listen to each other
  2. Discuss and explain our ideas
  3. Take responsibility for our own learning.

Reading Strategies

  1. Predict
  2. Ask questions
  3. Clarify (Spot breakdowns and try to mend them)
  4. Summarise (put important items together)
  5. Infer (using clues to determine the author's meaning)
  6. Make connections (to yourself, other texts and the world)
  7. Evaluate (identify powerful words or phrases and areas to improve)
