Welcome to Year 1

Phonics Screening Check

At the end of Year 1, children take part in a statutory assessment to check that they are at their age expected level for reading using their knowledge and skills learnt in phonics lessons.

It’s called the Phonics Screening Check and past papers and examples can be easily found online.

In order for your child to reach the age expected level they need to be able to identify all the sounds overleaf.

They will read real words and “alien” words that they will need to sound out and blend.

When reading these words, we encourage children to look for “Special Friends”. Two or three letters that make one sound. Then blend the words after that.

If you have any questions or would like some extra help with some home learning, please speak to Mr Hamlin, Ms Burrow or Ms Maciver.

All the children will be expected to read these "special friend" sounds found in words during the phonics screening check. Practice reading these sounds every night before bed and they will be phonics experts in no time!
